From the Alcus family · Alcus Fuel Oil & Sons, Amityville · Updated October 30, 2026
HEAP (the Home Energy Assistance Program) helps New York households pay for heat, including heating oil. Regular HEAP opens November 2, 2026. Here's how to apply if you live in Suffolk or Nassau.
Step 1: Check if you already get it
Many households on SNAP or Public Assistance receive HEAP automatically. If that's you, you may not need to apply — call your county DSS to check.
Step 2: See if you qualify
It depends on household size and income. New York State's example: a family of four with gross income up to $6,852 a month (about $82,230 a year) can qualify. Benefits are first-come, first-served, so apply early.
Step 3: Apply — online or through your county
- Online: ny.gov/HEAP
- Suffolk County (Amityville, North Amityville, Copiague, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Babylon, North Babylon, Deer Park, Wyandanch, East Farmingdale): Suffolk County Department of Social Services
- Nassau County (Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Seaford, Wantagh, Bethpage, Village of Farmingdale): Nassau County Department of Social Services
